How it works
All renewables… All information…
Renewable energy is a term that incorporates all forms of natural energy. These natural sources are intended to replace the harmful fossil fuels that contaminate the atmosphere.
In 2008, 19% of global energy came from renewables. Biomass (used in heating) was responsible for 13%, while 3.2% came from hydroelectricity (generated by the movement of water).
Other forms of renewable energy are solar power, wind power and geothermal power.
Solar panels
Solar panels take advantage of the sun’s rays to harness energy and use it to heat water or produce electricity. It doesn’t have to be a sunny day for solar panels to work – solar energy is available all year round and can be stored in batteries.
Wind turbines
Wind turbines are an efficient way to generate electricity. Wind farms are created both at sea and on land to take advantage of wind to create electricity. There are small-scale wind turbines that you can install at home and link to your property too.
Hydroelecticity
71% of global renewable energy comes from hydropower. Hydroelectricity is created using the power of water in motion all around the world to power homes and businesses. Reservoirs and rivers are used in this type of energy generation.
Geothermal energy
Geothermal energy is heat from the earth’s sub-surface that’s collected using a heat pump. The natural energy produced in the ground is gathered and then either transferred to air or water to heat up hot water supplies, homes and businesses.
Biomass
Biomass energy is created using organic materials from plants or animals. These are usually burned to heat water and produce steam to power turbines. Biomass energy is renewable because it’s made from products that can be created again and again.
